Twitter is most popular word of 2009

The Global Language Monitor has announced that Twitter is the Top Word of 2009 in its annual global survey of the English language.  Twittered was followed by Obama, H1N1, Stimulus, and Vampire. The near-ubiquitous suffix, 2.0, was No. 6, with Deficit, Hadron the object of study of CERN’s new atom smasher, Healthcare, and Transparency rounded out the Top 10.

Online apparel and footwear seller Zappos.com and shoe retailer Steve Madden are using a viral promotion to sell shoes by encouraging consumers to share online content they create with friends and family. To participate, go to www.zappos.com/sole-search and create shoe designs for a chance to have your design produced by Madden and sold!Three finalists will travel to New York City to pitch his or her shoe design to Steve Madden himself. Madden will then select a winning design to be produced and sold at the online store.The promo ends Dec. 29.

Oprah Winfrey to End Her Talk Show

The media mogul Oprah Winfrey will end her daytime talk show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” in 2011 as she prepares to start a cable channel of her own.

A spokeswoman for Ms. Winfrey’s production company, Harpo, confirmed Thursday evening that Ms. Winfrey would make an announcement on her show on Friday. The plans were first reported by WABC, the ABC station in New York City.

“The sun will set on the Oprah show as its 25th season draws to a close on Sept. 9, 2011,” Tim Bennett, the president of Harpo, said in a message to affiliates.

EA Sports Pop-Up Store

EA Sports has opened two pop-up stores in the midst of all the “black friday” and holiday season shopping. They are located in Boston and San Francisco and will only be open until December 14. The stores feature EA Sports Active and EA Sports Active: More Workouts, as well as staff “active trainers,” to showcase the titles for potential customers.

Starbucks Love Project

Starbucks is teaming up with (RED) to help fight AIDS in Africa. This holiday season, at participating Starbucks locations, if you spend over $15, you get a complimentary “Love CD”. For every love CD handed out, Starbucks donates $1 to the global fund to help fight AIDS in Africa. They also are a donating 5 cents for every “love drawing” submittd on their website (up to the first 1 million entries).

Sound Lab App

Vitaminwater and 50 Cent have teamed up to launch a new iPhone app that allows fans to remix parts of 50 Cent’s album on their device. Users can create and share their own mixes of “Baby by Me,” the first single from 50 Cent’s LP “Before I Self Destruct,” via their iPhone or iPod Touch.

Additionally, 50 Cent is giving one aspiring fan a chance to show off their skills with him in the recording studio. 50 Cent will scout out the best remix of his latest single and invite that person to meet up with him.

Users can record and share their personal mixes via Facebook, email, or on the interactive music companion site: http://www.50soundlab.com. The app will be available as long as 50 Cent is scouting the remixes. The deadline for entry is February 16.

Oxford dictionary’s word of the year

is………….. (drum roll)…….. UNFRIEND!

“Birther ” was in the running, so was “death panels,” but in the end the New Oxford American Dictionary can only pick one word of the year. For 2009, it’s “unfriend,” says the Oxford University Press.

Or in New Oxfordspeak: “unfriend – verb – To remove someone as a ‘friend’ on a social networking site such as Facebook. As in, ‘I decided to unfriend my roommate on Facebook after we had a fight.’”

The Limited Launches Line of Pet Sweaters

Fashion retailer, The Limited, is using viral marketing to promote its new line of pet sweaters. The program, called “Fabulous Pet Names,” asks people to submit photos of their pets and a short story about how the pet’s name came to be. Participants are then encouraged to share the content with others on their social networking sites.

People enter online where they can also post reviews and vote for their favorite pet name.

In conjunction with the launch of the program, powered by Brickfish, The Limited is making a $5,000 donation to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Captain Morgan plays football?

Captain Morgan may have pulled off the quietest and shortest-lived advertising ambush in sports history last Sunday. One that was almost universally unknown, barely noticed, and yet, promptly squashed by the NFL this week.

Like the other 21.9 million viewers watching the Dallas Cowboys face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night, you probably missed it. But the brand name known for spiced rum achieved the rare feat of sneaking an advertising fastball by the NFL – in the middle of a nationally televised game, no less. During the third quarter of Dallas’ 20-16 win, Eagles tight end Brent Celek caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Donovan McNabb,then appeared to purposefully back up and align himself in front of television cameras. Putting his hands on his hips, Celek raised his right leg, mimicking a pose similar to the pirate on Captain Morgan’s label.
